After 19 Years, Disney Reimagines Iconic Animal Kingdom Roller Coaster
It’s been almost two decades since Expedition Everest opened its doors at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Over the years, this iconic roller coaster has become a favorite of Disney Parks fans, known for its thrilling ride through the Himalayas and its famously still Yeti animatronic. However, after 19 years, Disney is finally reimagining this beloved attraction—but not in the way many fans might have hoped.
Expedition Everest has faced one major setback ever since its opening in 2006. The advanced Yeti audio-animatronic, which once swung at guests, was rendered motionless shortly after the ride’s debut when engineers discovered that the Yeti’s repetitive movements were damaging its base. As a result, the attraction has since relied on a strobe light effect to simulate movement, a phenomenon that Disney Parks fans have affectionately named “Disco Yeti.”
The promise of a full-scale refurbishment of the Yeti has been a dream of many Disney Parks fans. Disney Legend Joe Rohde, who was instrumental in designing Animal Kingdom Theme Park, once vowed to fix the Yeti. But after his retirement, that promise remains unfulfilled. And with the recent closures of several attractions at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, including It’s Tough To Be A Bug! and parts of DinoLand U.S.A., the chances of an Expedition Everest overhaul seem increasingly unlikely.
But Disney hasn’t entirely forgotten about this 19-year-old ride. In fact, Expedition Everest has found its way into Disney’s annual Easter celebrations! This year, the roller coaster inspired one of the resort’s stunning chocolate egg displays at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Check out this photo from See WDW on Facebook:
The chocolate egg display was created by Mary Rose, one of Disney’s many talented culinary cast members. The piece features a detailed carving of the ride’s tallest drop, with the tracks seemingly broken and falling out of the egg away from a haunting shadowy Yeti. The intricate design also incorporates elements from the ride’s Asia setting, including flags and signage. It’s a deliciously creative tribute to the ride that still holds a special place in the hearts of Disney Parks fans.
Walt Disney World Resort’s annual Easter egg displays are a much-anticipated tradition at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and Disney’s Beach Club Resort. Each year, Disney’s culinary team creates detailed, thematic chocolate eggs that capture the magic of Disney’s characters and theme parks. The Expedition Everest egg is just one of the many incredible creations for 2025.
