Disney Introduces AI Checkout Machines: Could This Be the End of Cast Member Roles?
The future of dining at Disneyland Resort has arrived with the introduction of AI self-checkout stations at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta in Disney California Adventure. Disney is once again experimenting with high-tech solutions for guests, bringing the convenience of self-checkout to the park’s food service, following earlier tests at Walt Disney World.

Disneyland’s New High-Tech Experiment: AI Self-Checkout Stations
This is not the first time Disney has dipped its toes into the AI self-checkout world. A similar trial took place at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort in Walt Disney World back in January 2025, but the results were short-lived. After a month, Disney decided to pull the AI checkouts, returning to the more traditional checkout method. However, Disneyland Resort is currently embracing the technology at Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, making it the new testing ground for this futuristic checkout process.
Where to Find the AI Checkout Stations
Guests visiting Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta will find two self-checkout stations set up on the right side of the restaurant near the north exit. These AI-powered systems are placed on folding tables, which have been specially wrapped to match the theming of the restaurant. The setup makes it clear that this is an experiment, but the sleek design ensures it blends with the overall environment.
The technology used is the same as what was tested earlier this year. Once guests load their trays with food and beverages, the built-in scanners automatically detect the items for checkout. But there’s a catch—items need to be spaced apart on the tray for the scanner to work correctly. If you stack your items too closely together, the scanner may fail to identify them.
How the AI Self-Checkout System Works
After the items are scanned, a screen prompts guests to review the tray’s contents. The AI system is not perfect, and it can sometimes struggle with modified menu items or similarly packaged products. It’s crucial to confirm that all items are correctly identified before continuing.
Guests can proceed to payment once everything is confirmed. The self-checkout system accepts MagicBands, credit cards, and mobile payment options, but, unfortunately, cash payments are not accepted at this time.
Additional Features: Cast Member Support
While the AI system is designed to be simple, Cast Members are still stationed nearby to assist guests with any challenges during the process. If there are any discrepancies with the scanned items, guests can access a manual page on the screen where items can be added. However, this feature is primarily intended for Cast Members to adjust if needed.
Cast Members are present not only to provide help but also to observe and gather feedback on how well the system functions during this test phase.
Will AI Self-Checkout Be the Future?
Disney’s experimentation with AI self-checkout systems signals a growing trend toward automation and efficiency in the theme park experience. The current trial at Disneyland Resort will likely inform future decisions, with the possibility of expanding the system across more locations if it proves successful.
