Disney+ has quickly become a powerhouse in the streaming industry, boasting a vast library of beloved classics, original content, and the full array of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic titles.

As subscribers around the world reflect on a year of magical moments, it’s also essential to acknowledge how Disney has navigated challenges and backlash, showcasing the delicate dance between corporate giants and their audiences.

Disney+ has passed over 150 million subscribers, a testament to the enduring appeal of Disney’s timeless content. The platform serves as a nostalgic haven for those wanting to relive childhood classics and as a hub for new and exclusive content. Original series like The Mandalorian and WandaVision have garnered critical acclaim, expanding the storytelling universes of Star Wars and Marvel. The streaming service has seamlessly blended the old with the new, creating a streaming experience that caters to a diverse audience.

However, Disney has not been immune to criticism and backlash. One instance is the new Snow White live-action film. Rachel Zegler, who is starring at Snow White, has made several comments about how this new film will be different from the original and how she talked about removing the Prince from the live-action film. Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid (2023) also received backlash due to the princess not having red hair or fair skin.

Additionally, Disney+ faced backlash over its content disclaimer policies. As viewers revisited classic titles like Dumbo (1941), Peter Pan (1953), and The Jungle Book (1967), they were met with disclaimers acknowledging and contextualizing racially insensitive stereotypes present in some of these films. Disney’s intention to address and educate viewers about historical missteps drew mixed reactions. Some applauded Disney for taking responsibility; others felt it was unnecessary or insufficient. Since that point, Disney has continued to move forward with its plans, being dubbed “woke” by many fans.

Disney has responded to feedback by announcing plans to invest heavily in creating more diverse and inclusive content. Recognizing the importance of representation in media, the company aims to produce content that reflects the richness of the global audience it serves.

While Disney+ has faced backlash and other issues, the streaming platform is still a strong competitor in the streaming service industry, which includes Netflix, Peacock, HBO Max, and many others. In addition to backlash about content, Disney+ may make changes with password sharing or increase the prices for the yearly subscription, which has not been popular among subscribers.
