11 Facts You Didn’t Know About Walter Elias Disney

3. He holds the record for Oscars.

Walt Disney died in 1966, but he still holds the record for winning the most individual Academy Awards and for the most individual nominations. During his lifetime, he won 22 Oscars, and he was nominated for 59. The wins and nominations were associated with a short Walt worked on, titled “Flowers and Trees,” and for the 1964 film Mary Poppins, among others.

Four of his wins were honorary Oscars—one for his creation of Mickey Mouse, presented to him in 1932, one in 1939 for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and two presented to him in 1942—one for his work on Fantasia and its contribution to sound design and one called the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award.
