Top 15 Walt Disney World Tips For Geeks

A Geek, one we think of as intellectually interested in all things technical. Someone who takes great delight in the details. Those of us who love the results of Disney Imagineers from the props in the ride queues to the nods to other animated films inside their animated films…we probably fit that title too. We sometimes get carried away with the geeky things at Disney. In the interest of geeks, this list was made to make sure you don’t miss anything on your trip to Walt Disney World. Feel free to add to this list because at Disney things are always changing and we all want to keep up with Disney innovations.

15. Charging Stations

If you find your techie devices needing a charge, you will find charging stations in each Disney World park. Look for it on the map or ask a Cast Member to direct you to the nearest charging station.

14. Disney D-Tech

Marketplace Co-op has Disney D-Tech where you can custom design cell phone cases for iPhone and some Galaxy phones. You design them on the computers in the store and they are created to your specifications. You can also choose from a wide array of pre-designed cases. The Co-Op is located in Disney Springs Marketplace. While you are visiting Disney Springs, don’t miss the Lego Store. It has specialized pieces, the newest sets are seen here first, you can play with Legos and they have the most amazing Lego sculptures both inside the store and outside too. Get your photo with them! Not heading to Disney Springs? Check out the Retail MagicBand on Demand in the Space Mountain gift shop at Magic Kingdom.

13. Mobile Food and Beverage Ordering

Hold the phone… literally! Mobile Ordering is available at numerous Quick Service Restaurants throughout Disney World Property. Order and pay for your food from the My Disney Experience app and pick up your food when you arrive. It’s awesome! Quick Service locations accepting Mobile Ordering are located throughout Disney World property from the parks to Disney Springs.

12. Hall of Presidents

This is one of the attractions that is continually changing, as the United States swears in a new person as President. The Audio-Animatronics in this attraction present all the US Presidents on one stage. There is a focus on US history and the office of the presidency in particular. In the waiting area there is a rug from the Oval office that literally took an act of Congress to get it there!

11. Mission Space Advanced Training Lab

After getting off Mission Space at Epcot, make sure you participate in this family oriented game in the post ride area. Cast Members are looking for volunteers to fly two space rockets in this astronomical race. Each rocket needs four crew members on board and additional support staff. The crew are given basic instructions on how to fix the ships problems and keep it moving, sometimes at hyper speeds and they stand on a platform above the support level. They use gaming techniques to send the fixes to specific parts of the rocket as they appear. Support staff are standing at computers that have mini games to earn the fixes you can upload to the crew on the rocket. You need to see which fixes the crew is running short of and complete the mini game that will allow you to upload it. Halfway through the game you have a short break to check on how your team is performing together and where your rocket compares to the progress of the other rocket. Don’t be afraid to volunteer for the crew positions. Cast Members explain the process clearly, you’ve got this!

10. Jedi Training and Star Tours

Children can sign up in the mornings at Disney’s Hollywood Studios to participate in the Jedi Training program at no extra cost! Hollywood Studios also has the Star Tours attractions which is epic for any Star Wars fan to experience. In the shop you find after riding Star Tours, or off to the right of the attraction entrance, you can create and build your own light saber! You can also create your own miniature R2D2. You will find the best Star Wars gifts here like a Darth Vader lunch bag, clever Star Wars themed t-shirts, a Jedi robe, great themed backpacks, toy sets, etc.

9. Dress your family in the same shirt

You can make your own T-shirts at home before you come, or order them online. If you want to do this after you arrive there is a design your own t-shirt shop at the Art of Disney store in Disney Springs Marketplace. You may want everyone to wear their favorite Goofy shirt one day, Mickey shirts the next, etc. Or maybe choose the same color and put something on them to personalize each one. If you are celebrating a big achievement, put that on there too!  It makes it easier to stay together and Cast Members will join in the fun seeing that you guys came to the park to have fun. Characters respond to what you are wearing in a big way so have fun getting photos and interacting with them. (This is my favorite part of the experience!) Everyone wearing funny Disney hats/ears works too. Buying your first pair of ears and getting your name embroidered on the back is a rite of passage experience and starts a tradition for future Disney trips. How many different sets of ears or funny hats have you collected? It’s Disney, have fun with it! Let your inner-child have a great, even somewhat embarrassing to your adult side, time at Disney. These are the great moments that make funny memories to hold onto.

8. Designing your ride at Test Track Future World, Epct

This attraction allows guests to design their dream vehicle using computer software while you are waiting to board the cars. When you get to the boarding area, you swipe your card or MagicBand that holds your car design and then as you move your way through the vehicle testing you will see a board that scores how your dream vehicle would have performed on that test.  At the post show you can again swipe your card/Magic Band and play racing games against other guests in a video game format race track.  Make sure you check out the display room full of the newest cars, vans, and trucks that you can climb in and test the seats, etc. You can get pricing and custom details on all these new cars and get your photo taken with them. There is so much personalization in this experience that I think it would surprise any geek how much fun they can find there.

6. MyDisneyExperience and MagicBands

There is free Wi-Fi at the Walt Disney World resort which makes it even easier to make use of the MyDisneyExperience app on your device. Take advantage of your MyDisneyExperience account both on your smartphone and other devices to choose and make reservations for your resort, dining reservations, your admission pass, FastPass+ selections, and a wealth of other Disney information. The app provides a map, wait times, show times, and all of your plans such as FP+, reservations, and Mobile Ordering options. The Magic Band will hold all the ticket, FastPass, and resort room access once linked!

5. Toy Story Mania

Toy Story Mania at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at Magic Kingdom are attractions where you actually jump inside a video game and play it!  At Toy Story Mania you will make your way through a queue filled with giant-size versions of Etch-a-Sketch, Tinker Toys, playing cards and crayons among other childhood games. You enter Andy’s room and see the box from his birthday gift opened. It is a carnival game.  You grab your 3-D glasses and board a ride vehicle that spins you through a series of carnival themed video game screens. Your cannon on board has a string you pull that “shoots” whatever you need for that particular game. You shoot pies, to practice with, followed with ring toss, darts to balloons, eggs, baseballs to break plates, and rubber darts.  At the end of this 4-D experience you will see your accuracy percentage, your score, and how your score compared to other players. Both Siemens AG and Hewlett-Packard contributed to creating this $80 Million dollar attraction making it the first Disney attraction to use industrial Ethernet for its ride control system. Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin takes you through a quick rundown of your mission: to protect the galaxy by destroying the Evil Emperor Zurg. Your ride vehicle can spin all the way around throughout the ride. Aim your cannon which has a laser light to help you hit your target. Aim for the moving targets for higher scores.

4. Dining with an Imagineer

Would you like to meet and ask a Disney Imagineer some questions? You can reserve a Lunch with an Imagineer at the Brown Derby restaurant in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. See what it takes to become an Imagineer, learn what technology is being used in the newest Disney attraction, or ask about that one thing you have been trying to figure out ever since you saw it at Disney, its wide open!

3. Vacations planned by Geeks are the best!

Choose your travel dates, resort, dining options, FastPass+ options, park touring plans, what to pack, and the best part is you are the one who finds the special experiences not known to many guests. Through research you find out more about tours, seasonal shows or dining options, the newest attractions, etc. Don’t let the idea of someone judging you affect your choice of clothes to bring, be your Disney geeky self and enthusiastically have fun!

2. Avatar Flight of Passage & Windtraders

Avatar Flight of Passage is one of the two attractions located in the new Pandora – The World of Avatar area within Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Prepare to straddle what feels somewhat like one of those motorcycles at an arcade, be secured in, and then using 3D screen technology, awesome 4D effects, and motion simulation – feel like you are literally flying on the back of a mountain banshee in the most exhilarating way. Your banshee (somewhat like a flying dragon) will soar through the sky as it takes you on the ride of a lifetime through Pandora – The World of Avatar.d on. New technology souvenirs await as you exit the attraction through the Windtraders gift shop. Visit Windtraders to create your own Avatar Action Figure! Your image will be taken and transformed into an Avatar Action Figure you can take home with you. Plus, you can also purchase a robotic Banshee (flying dragon-like figure) that will interact with you. Perch it on your shoulder and show it off to your friends and family. Pretty awesome stuff that will provide a memorable souvenir to take home.

1. Walt Disney Presents

This classic attraction has recently undergone some changes! Walt Disney Presents continues to offer guests a chance to view the history of Walt, but now has the addition of a space for guests to preview what’s on the horizon. Models such as Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, and even Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction are available to preview. We’ve always loved this informative collection of memorabilia, designs, and historical models about Walt. Now we get to experience the past, present, and future of Walt Disney! Walt never stopped learning, it was a passion for him. He was totally a geek!

About Cassie

Cassie L. I am a lifelong Disney fan. I attended Walt Disney World in 1971, and was there during the opening week of EPCOT, and have visited the Disney Parks for than 30 times. I have had the privilege of visiting Disneyland as a child, and then again with my children. My family recently moved from the northeastern United States to the Walt Disney World area. I now have cast members in my family and enjoy hearing the magical stories at the end of a shift. I love visiting all of the parks and getting to try more Disney food and being able to share it with you to help you plan your own magical day at Disney.
