News! Main Street Bakery Soft Opening Photo Gallery

Soft openings have started for Main Street Bakery at the Magic Kingdom. A soft opening means that it is not yet officially open but Disney Dining got a sneak peek today!

Vouchers are being handed out to some guests, which will allow them to enter the refurbished Main Street Bakery.

It closed in January and will officially reopen on June 19 as a Starbucks, but will keep the name. The new menu will feature Starbucks drinks and pastries. As of this visit, cinnamon rolls were not on the menu but are available at nearby Gaston’s Tavern. Baked goods here are now primarily Starbucks brands, but you will find a few Disney made options as well.

The vouchers would allow each person on free item. You could not order off the entire menu during the soft opening.

There are still lots of dark woods and the cast members are still wearing the Victorian era clothing.

Here are the photos from our visit. Most of the people you see in line were Disney staff members, a very smart move to get the staff up to speed with primarily insiders.

The Theming is Excellent

Leaning Palms Review Typhoon Lagoon

Near the main entrance of Typhoon Lagoon sits Leaning Palms, the main quick service eatery in the park. Just like the rest of the park, Leaning Palms has suffered damage from the typhoon that turned the once tropical paradise into a shipwrecked island.

The theming throughout Typhoon Lagoon is what makes this water park so popular, and this attention to detail doesn’t stop at Leaning Palms. The building is slanted as though strong winds have pushed the structure around. Random objects like lifesavers are stuck on the roof from the storm. Disney’s Imagineers have once again taken a standard quick service stand and made it something special and interesting.

A look at the menu board shows that typical Disney food is served here. Offerings include a bacon cheeseburger, chicken nuggets, a chilidog, as well as some lighter options like a turkey pesto sandwich and chicken ceasar salad. Kids meals are served in a cute sand pail with a shovel, a perfect idea since there are several sandy areas for kids to play in throughout the park! For adults there are several drink options and there is a limit of two alcoholic beverages per ID.

I had never seen the turkey pesto sandwich anywhere else in the World so I knew I had to try it. My dining companions opted for more conventional fare, chicken nuggets and a chilidog. The sandwich and chilidog come with your choice of house-made chips or apple slices while the chicken nuggets come with fries or apple slices.

The chicken nuggets were just as good at Leaning Palms as they are anywhere else in Disney World, crisp and not dry. A condiment bar nearby has ketchup, mustard, mayo, honey mustard, and BBQ sauce for your dipping pleasure. The chilidog features a meat chili with no beans that is neither dry nor watery. The dog itself had a nice bite, no chewiness here!

When I received the turkey pesto sandwich I was blown away by its size! This thing is a monster! It’s piled high with turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and pesto mayo on herbed bread. The bread is stiff enough to stand up to all these ingredients, but is still fresh. If you’re hungry from swimming around the wave pool, but don’t want anything too heavy I would highly recommend this sandwich.

The housemade-chips were just okay. They are a thicker cut than the average potato chip, which I enjoyed. A more even distribution of the seasoning would have been appreciated though. I found that chips with little to no seasoning were bland and just not worth eating. In the future I would choose apple slices over the chips.

After lunch I decided to explore the other dining options around the park. Nearby is a small hut that serves mini donuts with raspberry, chocolate or white chocolate dipping sauces, which looked absolutely delicious. I’ll definitely have to try these on my next trip!

Another great find was Happy Landings Ice Cream. This stand features the standard Disney novelty ice creams, a root beer float, soft serve cones, a sundae, and the legendary sand pail! This monstrosity features vanilla and chocolate soft serve, waffle cone pieces, cookie pieces, sprinkles, hot fudge, caramel, strawberry sauce, whipped cream, and topped with a cherry all served up in a sand pail. On a hot, Florida day this treat is something that will hit the spot for the whole family and for just $9.99!

Typhoon Lagoon also has refillable mugs for $9.99 to help you beat the heat. Beverage refill stations are set up throughout the park. The unique thing about these mugs is that they have a bar code on them that you scan at the machine to get your refill.

While dining options are limited at Typhoon Lagoon, Leaning Palms serves a mix of standard and more unique eats to please the whole family.

F.A.S.T. Review

Food- There is enough variety to appease kids and adults. Expect standard Disney quick service food here with the fun addition of a sand pail for kid’s meals.

Atmosphere- The theming here is excellent. Be on the look out for those small details Imagineers have thrown in!

Service – Cast Members were friendly and efficient. While waiting in line a Cast Member asked us how our day was going and what our favorite ride was. It is normally less busy here than other Disney dining options, so Cast Members have more time to interact with guests.

Tips – As Leaning Palms is the main quick service restaurant, avoid it at main feeding times if the park is busy. Walk around a little bit to find a table because there are plenty of shaded tables around the corner.

Introducing The Disney Dining Blog

A Brief Introduction

I want to take a moment and introduce myself. I’ve been one of the writers for Disney Dining since the site first started. In the weeks to come I am going to be giving dining tips and sharing my experiences with you, in the hopes of making your trip to Walt Disney World more enjoyable.

In 2010 my husband, daughter, and I were lucky enough to move to the Orlando area. It was something that we had talked about doing for a long time and when the opportunity presented itself we jumped at it. On July 1 of last year we moved away because of my husband’s job. It was with heavy hearts that we packed up and left. His job called for frequent trips back to Florida and our daughter and I usually accompanied him. When the company asked him if he would like to move back we did not have to think too hard. Ten months after moving away we made Orlando our home once again.

My family and I are Annual Passholders. It did not take long for the passes to pay for themselves, we spend that much time in the parks. I’m an obsessed Star Wars fan so you can guess my favorite ride. My daughter and I rode the updated Star Tours several times the first day that it opened for previews, we’ve been on it over 160 times since.

One thing that shocked me when we first moved to Florida is just how many dining options there are at Disney. I had no idea that there were so many places to eat! I will try to take some of the confusion out of eating at Disney, plus share some personal experiences. I don’t have a favorite WDW restaurant because they are all so special. I have had many more good dining experiences than bad. I have seen many cast members go above and beyond to make dining a pleasure.

We’re very casual when it comes to visiting the parks. We love to stop by and visit for a couple of hours, several times a week. I am hoping that I will be able to give you an informal firsthand glimpse into my love of Disney. I’ll share experiences that I have that might benefit others in some way. I’ll also try to get you excited about your next visit to Central Florida. Walt Disney World is special, if you didn’t believe that you wouldn’t be reading this right now. I will do my best to help make your next vacation more magical.

Star Wars Land Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando is reportedly expanding to include a much larger section in Hollywood Studios after for their $4 billion acquisition late transaction late last year. Reportedly, Star Wars Land is coming to Florida!

According to Theme Park Insider, plans are in the works for a giant Star Wars section in the amusement park.

“Multiple sources have told me the long-awaited dream of theme park geeks everywhere is actually happening,” Theme Park Insider’s Robert Niles writes. “Disney’s moving ahead with both Cars Land and Star Wars Land at the Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World.”

Where in the park remains a mystery, but Niles’ sources told him the following.

“The logical places for that expansion would be on either side of the existing Star Tours ride. From what I’ve heard, it appears that the expansion would take out the area between Star Tours and the auto stunt show stadium, including the Muppet theater and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids play area. But I’ve also heard of consideration of going in the opposite direction, which would place the new land on the site of the Backlot Express restaurant and Indiana Jones stunt show theater. Given that the Indy theater’s used for several other events throughout the year, and that both the Muppets and Honey I Shrunk the Kids attractions long ago passed the height of their popularity, I’m hearing more forceful arguments for the first option.”

Finally, Niles write, “This appears to be a five-year project, putting completion in 2018, though Disney could choose to throw money at it and accelerate it by a year.”

It is also being report by TheForce.net s that there might be a Mos Eisley Cantina restaurant at Hollywood Studios.

“Disney is discussing building a Cantina-themed restaurant in the new Hollywood Studios Star Wars area. Last April, the blog Disney and More reported that a restaurant modeled after Chalmun’s Cantina in Mos Eisley was being considered for Disneyland Paris. It makes sense to bring a major renovation like a Cantina restaurant to multiple locations, in the same way that Star Tours: The Adventures Continue opened at several Disney parks around the world in 2011.”

Many thanks to Theme Park Insider and TheForce.net.

Anaheim Produce Review

Sunset Boulevard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is dappled with food carts and stands with fare ranging from turkey legs to burgers and ice cream. Anaheim Produce, sandwiched between Toluca Legs Turkey Co. and Rosie’s All American Café, is the perfect stop to pick up some lighter fare.

Anaheim Produce offers a selection of healthy snacks that would appeal to any Hollywood star, including whole apples and oranges and prepackaged fruit or vegetable packs with choices of apples and caramel, carrots and celery, pineapple, grapes, or melon. Guests can grab a bag of dried cranberries or trail mix to munch on as they peruse the streets of old Hollywood. To satisfy a carb craving, classic Disney snacks such as Mickey shaped pretzels and those crunchy, sugary churros can be found at the stand as well. Frozen lemonade, ice-cold sodas, or a tangy lemon-lime margarita are refreshing ways to stave off the summer heat.

Across the street from the Theater of the Stars and in the shadow of the Hollywood Tower Hotel (aka The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror), Anaheim Produce is the perfect place to soak in the old Hollywood ambiance. The Citizens of Hollywood are often out and about as well, entertaining crowds with their antics while hoping for their big break.

The quick-service location lives up to its name, depending on the number of attendants at the registers. Since guests can make their choices as they approach the register, they can quickly pay and return to enjoying the park.

With its grab and go style and healthy options, Anaheim Produce is the perfect stop for guests that are in a hurry to pick up a snack on their way to redeem their Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Fastpasses, waiting in line to see Fantasmic!, or just looking for a healthier option than that giant turkey leg.

Top Ten Disney Character Dining Experiences

There is no right or wrong age to enjoy a meal with the characters. If you have shy little ones, scheduling a character dining experience is a good way to introduce them to the larger than life figures. Others enjoy a chance for some one on one time with Mickey or another favorite. While character dining tends to be a bit on the expensive side, there is plenty of food. You will leave full. Most character meals are either buffets or served family style.

We’re expanding the Disney boundaries a bit and including a couple of selections from Disneyland on this list. There are also many great experiences that have been left out. Please don’t be upset if your favorite is not included. All character dining experiences are unique and will hold a special place in your heart.

<!--

Remember that characters can change. Just because someone isn’t listed here does not mean that the character will not be at your meal. The opposite is also true, some characters listed might not be at your seating. It is strongly recommended that you make a reservation as soon as you know your plans. Sometimes it is best to call, that way the reservations agent can help you to get a table. For Walt Disney World call 407-WDW-DINE (407-939-3463). The Disneyland number for dining reservations is 714-781-DINE (714-781-3463). To make an online dining reservation for Walt Disney World visit http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/reservations/dining/. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance. Some require a deposit which you will lose if you miss your reservation and did not cancel far enough in advance. You will receive an email reminder so that you will not forget.

10) Akershus Royal Banquet Hall

Norway Pavilion, Epcot

This is the backup that many people have if they cannot get a seat at Cinderella’s Royal Table, but it is a great experience on its own. You’ll still have a chance to dine in a castle, the atmosphere is an experience in and of itself. Snow White should be there. She could be joined by Cinderella, Mary Poppins, Aurora, Belle, and Ariel. Food is served family style. While the restaurant is Norwegian, there are choices for people who have no idea what Kjøttkake is. (It’s a meatball dish.) A keepsake photo is included in the price.

9) Hollywood & Vine

Echo Lake, Disney’s Hollywood Studios

This could be a real treat for your preschoolers. Breakfast and lunch are both character meals with Disney Junior favorites. Dinner is served as well but there are no characters present. Characters may include June from Little Einsteins, Handy Manny, Special Agent Oso, and Jake the Neverland Pirate. Characters do change from time to time, based on what is currently popular on Disney Junior. American cuisine is served buffet style. There is a lot of interaction, kids can sing and dance along with their favorites. A good time will be had by your entire family.

8) Tusker House Restaurant

Africa, Disney’s Animal Kingdom

Join Donald and friends on safari for breakfast or lunch. A buffet is served, featuring American favorites and also dishes with an African flair. Mickey, Daisy, and Goofy might join the party as well. They’ll be dressed in safari gear. If you plan to have breakfast with Donald make your reservation as early as possible. You’ll have a chance to walk through the park before it opens to the public. Dinner is also served but it is not a character meal. Some Disney fans claim that Tusker house has the best food of any Walt Disney World buffet. The Jungle Juice is a must try. The atmosphere is incredible as well. You and your party are sure to have a great time.

7) Ariel’s Grotto

Paradise Pier, Disney California Adventure

If you’d like to reserve a character meal for your day at Disney California Adventure this is the place to do it. Breakfast and lunch are character meals. Ariel, Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty make appearances during “Ariel’s Disney Princess Celebration” which is held “under the sea”. Dinner is not a character meal. Choose an entrée from the menu, salads and desserts are served family style. Entrées include pasta, chicken, and vegetarian selections. Head upstairs to the Cove Bar for appetizers and a cocktail if you’re of age. Enjoy a great view of Paradise Bay while you sip your drink. It’s a nice way to get a break from the craziness of the park.

6) Cape May Café

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

Epcot can be exhausting, so fill up before you hit the park at Disney’s Beach Club Resort. Breakfast is the only meal at Cape May Café that is served with characters. Minnie, Goofy, and Donald are all ready for a day on the beach! A typical breakfast buffet is served. Crayons are on the tables so that the kids can draw on the paper tablecloths. After your meal you can walk or take a boat to either Epcot or Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

5) Plaza Inn

Main Street U.S.A., Disneyland Park

What better way to start your day at Disneyland Park than at “Minnie & Friends – Breakfast in the Park”? Minnie is joined by classic characters such as Pluto, Goofy, Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, and Chip ‘n’ Dale. Omelets are cooked to order, the rest of the food is served on the buffet. Lunch and dinner are served but they are not character meals. The Victorian-style building has been there since the park opened in 1955, although it was originally called the Red Wagon Inn. It was one of Walt Disney’s personal favorites.

4) ‘Ohana

Disney’s Polynesian Resort

Disney fans are passionate about ‘Ohana! Once you have eaten there you will see why. Breakfast is the only character meal. It is served family style. Lilo and Stitch will stop by. Other characters seem to change from time to time. Mickey, Pluto, and Chip ‘n’ Dale have all been known to make an appearance. The atmosphere has a Hawaiian feel and the food is incredible. If you are not sure which character meal to book for breakfast this could be the perfect fit. Once you’re finished, the Magic Kingdom is a short monorail ride away. If dining with the characters isn’t all that important to you make a reservation at ‘Ohana for dinner. The bread pudding alone is worth the price of the meal.

3) The Crystal Palace

Main Street, U.S.A., Magic Kingdom

The atmosphere alone at the Crystal Palace could take your breath away. It is not your typical theme park restaurant! Character meals are served for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. American favorites are served on the buffet. Winnie the Pooh and others from the 100 Acre Wood will make the rounds. Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet usually join the party. Rabbit will often make an appearance as well near Easter. Outside of the Crystal Palace you can get some great shots of Cinderella Castle without a lot of people in the way. Reserve an early breakfast so that you can see what Main Street, U.S.A. looks like before the park opens.

2) Chef Mickey’s

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

Another fan favorite, Chef Mickey’s is a great place to meet some of the classic characters. Breakfast and dinner are served, both are a buffet. This is another great place to have a nice breakfast and then take the monorail to the Magic Kingdom. You can also reserve a time for dinner and take a much needed break away from Walt Disney World’s most popular park. The classic characters that may appear are Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald, dressed in their chef’s outfits. American cuisine is served. There’s a sundae bar so that you can finish your dinner with your own creation.

1) Cinderella’s Royal Table

Fantasyland, Magic Kingdom

When most people think of Walt Disney World, they immediately picture Cinderella Castle. Disney allows guests a chance to dine like royalty inside. This is one of the hardest reservations to book, try 180 days in advance or as soon as you know your plans. If you can’t make a reservation try again 48 hours before your desired time in case there was a cancellation. The food is an “all-you-care-to-enjoy banquet” featuring American favorites. There are gifts for the children and you will receive a picture package with Cinderella as well. Cinderella will be joined by several princesses. Those included could be Aurora, Belle, Snow White, and Ariel. If you are looking for an unforgettable way to propose while on your Disney vacation email wdw.crt.special.events@disney.com and ask about the proposal package at Cinderella’s Royal Table. Disney will help you to create a magical moment that neither of you will ever forget.
