5 Reasons We Love Test Track in Epcot

Every time we’re in Epcot, the first attraction we make a beeline for is definitely Test Track. Where else in Walt Disney World – or anywhere else – do you have the opportunity to design your own dream car, and then test it on a heart-pounding, state-of-the-art simulated test track?? Here are five reasons Test Track has been a consistently popular ride from day one (to take full advantage, arrive early in the day or grab a FastPass+).

5. Atmosphere and Easter Eggs

Like all Walt Disney World attractions, the ride itself is only part of the story. The entire journey is what’s important, and this includes the time you spend waiting in line. While waiting to begin your Test Track experience, you’ll soak up the atmosphere of a Chevrolet design studio. You’ll pass some of Chevrolet’s dreamy concept cars, and perhaps glean some inspiration for your own upcoming design. Then, you’ll watch a projection of a model car, and learn about the design process from a Chevy employee. If you want to be thoroughly prepared, you can even take a touchscreen tutorial and learn about designing a car.

Keep an eye out for hidden World of Motion (the transportation-themed ride that occupied this space until Test Track was built in 1999) logos throughout the site – if you look carefully, you may find them on signs, murals and even garbage cans!

4. Create a Custom Concept Car

By far our favorite element of Test Track is the design stage. Who wouldn’t love the chance to design his or her own dream car? You’ll work at an illuminated touchscreen to navigate a dazzling array of design elements to create your own virtual concept car, from basic shape, to color and accessories, to engine size. Whether you’re looking to recreate the Batmobile, or have an idea for a car that looks like it belongs in the Jetsons, you’ll have a fantastic time letting your creativity run wild! Keep in mind that you have a limited amount of time to perfect your creation, so don’t get too caught up in details, or you won’t have a chance to finish your design before riding.

3. Speedy Sim

Once you’ve created your dream car and are ready for your test drive, you’ll scan your MagicBand and your design will be uploaded into a roomy, 6-passenger (you can actually fit 3 guests on each seat, a rarity in the parks!), simulated car. You’ll ride in style as your sim-car takes you through a test drive, gauging your creation against the creations of other guests in your sim-car. It’s a thrill to see your own, custom-created car on the screen in front of you, and to see how your design scores after each test, especially in comparison to the creations of others in the sim-car. Worth noting – your sim-car will reach speeds of 65 miles per hour, making Test Track the fastest ride in Walt Disney World!

2. Wild Ride

Your newly-designed custom car will be tested in four categories: capability, efficiency, responsiveness and power. You’ll find out how your design handles on rough terrain, hair-pin turns and even hills as high as 3 stories. Your progress is displayed via charts on the sim-car’s dashboard.   From lightning strikes and inclement weather skidding, to accelerating around nerve-wracking switch-backs, to evading an oncoming 18-wheeler, there are thrills at every (literal and figurative) turn in the nearly mile-long track. My favorite is the speed test, which takes your sim-car outside and around the exterior of the Test Track building, reaching top speeds that will leave you exhilarated and wanting to come back for another go.   And after all, why not? You can’t expect to design a car that excels in all four categories in just one attempt!

1. Post-Ride Thrills

The ride itself is only half of the fun! Once you’ve finished designing and testing your concept car, don’t rush off to your next FastPass+ quite yet – take some time to wander around the interactive showroom, which is an attraction unto itself! You can play games, and race and test your creation with other guests. You can also film a commercial featuring your design. You’ll want to pose with your favorite Chevrolet dream cars, and of course with your own creation, in front of a background of your choice (a personal fave is the underwater scene; who doesn’t wish their car was amphibious??). You can even have your photos and commercial emailed to you, so you can continue to enjoy your custom-made car long after your vacation has ended.

One of the many reasons Test Track is so appealing is that every time you ride, it’s a different adventure. Not happy with the way your design car performed in a specific category? Have an idea for an even better custom design? No problem – come back for a second (or third, or fourth!) try. The sky’s the limit for your custom-made dream car, and with so many fun games and photo ops post-ride, not to mention a thrilling, death-defying spin on the test track, this is sure to become a family favorite.
